Develop your woodworking skills under expert guidance using a wide range of tools and equipment to produce a wooden item of your choice. We have two classes available on either Tuesday or Thursday evenings.
Beginners start the class a week earlier than Continuers who have already attended an earlier woodwork course at Beaumont. The first piece you will make will be a dove-tail jointed box which can be for example, a trinket box, jewellery box, card box etc depending on the dimensions you choose. This is an excellent starting point as you will learn how to use all the marking out and cutting tools and gain a good basic understanding of woodworking skills.
Materials needed to make the dovetail joint box:
- A piece of wood (eg oine or oak. It needs to be proper wood, not mdf) and should be approx 100mm wide by 600mm long and about 12 mm deep. ( If your piece is deeper than 12mm it can be reduced in size but it must not be less than 12mm deep.)
- You will also need a pair of hinges but you will not need these for the first lesson.
- Wood can be obtained from:
- Buttles, Soothouse Spring, St Albans AL3 6NX
- Wickes, Acrewood Way, St Albans AL4 0JY or
- Ayott Sawmill, Ternex Ltd, Ayot Green AL6 9BA
Whilst you are making the box (which will take a few sessions) you can be thinking about what you would like to make next. Chris will help you to plan this and advise what type of wood and other materials you will need to buy once you are ready to start working on it.
Whilst this is an adult class, a parent may enrol with a child aged 11 – 16 years of age to make an item together. Chilldren under 16 may not attend on their own.
